Introduction

A key component of DSEC’s strategy is enhancing targeted, place-based programming in select regions. Hub regions are located in select areas that include high concentrations of DoW personnel, including military and research installations. Management for each regional hub is supported by a designated Hub Lead organization, which helps guide regional goals and relationship building. In addition, each regional hub includes recognized regional partners who are familiar with and operate in the area, creating stronger ties between community and industry partners. By using this approach, DSEC aims to expand the reach of DoW STEM programs, establish connections between programs, create pathways into DoW STEM careers, and identify opportunities to leverage partner collaborations within the hub region.

This section provides a snapshot of each DSEC regional hub, including their logic model, progress towards near-term hub region outcomes, and a map of DSEC programming in the region.

Each Hub Lead organization fulfilled four roles for their region. A description of these roles follows and serves as the organizing framework for hub logic models.

Network Administrator

In this role, the Hub Leads create opportunities for stakeholders to come together at planned meetings and events, either virtually or in-person. They leverage resources and market STEM opportunities for their region. In addition, the Hub Leads conduct regional asset mapping to determine where STEM programming and resources currently exist as well as identifying potential gaps and areas for growth.

Catalyst

As a catalyst, the Hub Leads provide access to STEM opportunities for students and educators throughout the region. This includes facilitating access to DSEC partner programs as well as opportunities with local DoW STEM installations.

Place-Based Local STEM Leader

Hub Leads work to ensure programming aligns with local priorities identified through the regional STEM ecosystem. They coordinate with schools and educators to embed authentic STEM learning experiences

Career-Connected Pathways Builder

Hub Leads build partnerships for internships, mentorships, and work-based learning in their region. They also work to align STEM curriculum to defense-related career pathways, working in coordination with the defense industrial base and other STEM ecosystem business partners. To generate awareness of career pathways, Hub Leads may also create student-facing resources.
